Choosing a sleeping bag is not a question to be taken lightly. Whether you're trekking over several days, a weekend hike with a bivouac, a night in a refuge, or a camping vacation in a tent, you need a sleeping bag adapted to your needs to ensure a good night's sleep. As you can see, the choice of sleeping bag is crucial to your comfort. To help you make the right choice, we've put together our top 10 sleeping bags.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SLEEPING BAG?

Sleeping bag weight

First of all, it's important to consider the weight of the sleeping bag. If you're going trekking and need to carry your sleeping bag all day, it needs to be as light and compressible as possible. If, on the other hand, you're going on a road trip or camping trip, you won't be carrying your sleeping bag, so weight won't be a decisive criterion for you.
However, it should be noted that if you need a sleeping bag for a trek with low comfort temperatures, it will inevitably be heavier.

Sleeping bag comfort temperature

All sleeping bags have 3 temperatures: comfort, limit and extreme.
- Comfort temperature: this indicates the temperature at which a person is comfortable, and doesn't feel cold in their sleeping bag.
- The comfort limit temperature: this indicates the temperature at which the person must curl up in order not to feel the cold.
- Extreme temperature: this indicates the temperature at which the person feels the cold in their sleeping bag and risks hypothermia.
This is the comfort temperature you should be looking at when buying a sleeping bag, as it's the temperature that best suits your comfort and guarantees a good night's sleep outdoors. However, if you're rather chilly, we recommend a sleeping bag with a comfort temperature a little lower than the temperatures you expect to face.
To choose the right sleeping bag, especially if you're going trekking, it's important to identify the geographical area of your hike, the altitudes where you'll be sleeping, the season and the weather conditions, in order to establish the comfort temperature you need for your sleeping bag.

Sleeping bag filling

The filling of your sleeping bag can also be a factor in determining your choice. For similar temperatures, a synthetic filling is often heavier and less compressible than down, but more resistant to moisture. We therefore recommend the synthetic sleeping bag for sleeping under the stars, for bivouacking in damp areas, or if you know that the region is prone to bad weather. Down sleeping bags are often lighter, more compressible, insulating and breathable. However, if it gets wet, it loses its insulating power, although some down sleeping bags are treated to resist moisture. This makes it ideal for anyone who needs a warm, lightweight sleeping bag.

Loft

The loft of a sleeping bag is an important consideration for down sleeping bags. This is said to be good from 650 cuin (cubic inches) upwards, and refers to the capacity of down and feathers to trap air and therefore expand, literally swelling to keep you warm.

Sleeping bag shape

There are 2 types of sleeping bag shape:
- The sarcophagus sleeping bag optimizes thermal protection by conforming to the shape of your body, and is often lighter and takes up less space. This shape is highly recommended for trekking trips.
- The rectangular sleeping bag or blanket sleeping bag is more comfortable, as it gives you more foot room, but offers less thermal protection, as there's more air in it. We therefore recommend them for summer/spring camping.

Compressed volume

Compressed volume is also an essential factor to consider when choosing your sleeping bag, especially if you need to maximize your space in a hiking backpack. Suffice it to say, if you can't fit the compressed sleeping bag inside or outside your trekking backpack, your sleeping bag isn't going to be very useful to you.
