The Zero Impact Challenge

The aim is to to help all mountaineering enthusiasts, beginners and experienced alike, to imagine what a sustainable way to enjoy the mountains might look like. Transport, waste, equipment, food...

For 6 months, each participant can take part in the challenge alone, as part of a team or a family, and meet other mountaineers determined to take concrete action to improve their practice, and practice in general. Each participant will benefit from day-to-day support from the Mountain Riders team, backed up for the occasion by prestigious guests offering invaluable advice.

After completing their carbon footprint, 4 workshops will be held on textiles, mobility, food and waste. In each case, speakers will be on hand to share their expertise and answer participants' questions.

The launch event took place on November 9, mobilizing a dozen households in person and more than 15 households for the remote evening! It was an opportunity to explain the challenge in more detail, introduce each of the participants and carry out an initial positioning workshop with them on each of the themes.

The challenge will run from November to April 2022 in two formats: firstly, a group of 8 households of skiers, hikers and cyclists to observe the diversity of disciplines and compare their points of view as city dwellers and mountain dwellers. Secondly, by bringing together of 16 households from several French massifs: alpine, subalpine and Pyrenean. The profiles of the participants are equally diverse, and will provide an opportunity to compare feedback from different parts of France.

Preserving biodiversity in the Verdon

The Verdon's very high level of visitor numbers brings many tourists and new professionals to this exceptional but fragile territory every year. A project was therefore launched to raise awareness and train professionals to contribute to the evolution of their practices and better preserve aquatic biodiversity.

A film has been produced as part of this training program:

This film retraces all the uses made of the Verdon's water by the men and women of the region. It was an opportunity to discuss with Verdon professionals the importance of protecting biodiversity and the means to achieve it.

This project will continue in 2022, with on-the-job training for canyoning and water trekking guides. The association is currently considering ways of rewarding the professionals who attend the training courses, having acquired the right gestures and techniques for better preservation of aquatic biodiversity.
