SOLAR was founded in 1958 by three friends with a passion for winter sports: Gaston Beauchef, Georges Bourguignon and Monsieur Perradin. Their adventure began in the charming town of Annecy, where one of them discovered a broken glasses frame on the sidewalk. This fortuitous moment marked the beginning of an incredible story that would lead them to create sunglasses that would quickly seduce the greatest skiers of the 1960s and the stars of the 1970s. Their first model generated sales of almost 1 million francs, enabling them to acquire premises in Annecy and set up production there.Today, SOLAR is proud of its "made in France" heritage, with all stages of production carried out on its premises. This quality of craftsmanship even won it an Oscar from the then Prime Minister Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Over the years, the brand established itself as the official supplier to the French national ski team, and became Europe's largest manufacturer of sunglasses in the late 70s.
After a difficult period marked by a loss of identity on the international market, SOLAR was acquired by Julbo in 2016. A recognized specialist in eyewear for over a century, Julbo has committed to reviving SOLAR as of 2017.
