In the 1900s, the story of Rite in the Rain began with Alec Polson of the Polson Lumber Company asking Jerry Darling to find a more efficient way to record log measurements in the harsh weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest. Jerry's research led to the birth of Rite in the Rain in Raymond, WA. Inspired by typographer Herbert Buffington, Jerry founded a company to produce paper resistant to heavy rain. The manufacturing process involved drilling small holes in the sheets, dipping them by hand in a waterproofing solution, then hanging them to dry. Initially shared with Tacoma Printing & Binding Co. the production space was later moved to Tacoma WA, where Jerry hired Bill Sny to design a revolutionary web coating machine. This unique machine helped make JL Darling Corp. the only company in the world to produce waterproof paper. With the addition of an offset press and a paper cutter, the product range expanded to include a forestry line and an engineering line.
At the age of 68, Jerry Darling, founder of Rite in the Rain, was looking for a successor to run the company. He met Lloyd Silver, sales manager for Day's Clothing, and a meaningful friendship was formed. In 1958, Lloyd became president, and within five years the company doubled in size, with Lloyd now owning 50% of the shares. In 1965, a new building was erected on Port Road in Tacoma, WA. In the 1970s, Lloyd's sons Todd and Scott joined the team. In 1993, they purchased all the company's shares, becoming co-presidents. In 1996, the Silver brothers moved to a new facility, launched "Rite Green", aimed at energy-efficient processes. The ecologicallyresponsible coatingwas patented in 2005.
