Once upon a time...
In the heart of Mora, Sweden, lies a long tradition of knife-making. For over 400 years, we've been shaping sharp knives for the rest of the world. The story of Morakniv begins in 1891, when Frost-Erik Erson returned to the village of Östnor in Mora after four years as a lumberjack in North America. That same year, he founded his wooden sled factory, which also produced carts and knives for internal use. In those days, efficient resource management was paramount, and the use of material left over from production was almost taken for granted. This concept later proved to be a success.
Shortly afterwards, knife production in the factory took off, becoming a sought-after product for travelling salesmen who distributed Morakniv knives on their travels throughout Sweden. By the turn of the century, Morakniv had become an established name among craftsmen and began to create ripples on the water with its exceptional products.
The characteristic red handle was born at this time and over time has become a signature of Östnor knives. Initially, these handles were made from ordinary untreated birch from production offcuts. Later, curly masur birch became the material of choice for high-end models. However, when curly birch became scarce, Morakniv reintroduced ordinary birch, but gave it a reddish tint before varnishing.
As production steadily increased over the decades, these stains were abandoned in favor of a dark red paint that diversified into several distinct shades over time.
All knives with wooden handles have been hand-assembled at our factory in Östnor since 1891. Classic models with red handles, as well as our specialized wood-carving tools, are still made here according to this traditional know-how, which accounts for around 10% of our total production.
Morakniv is not just a brand; it is the embodiment of a tradition of craftsmanship dedicated to providing tools of exceptional quality. Every piece we produce reflects our commitment to Swedish excellence in cutlery.
